Introduction

This 7-day expedition is a raw, untamed journey tailored for true adventure seekers. Traveling by a heavy-duty 4x4 vehicle from Nairobi, this route cuts through the dramatic landscapes of northern Kenya—climbing past Mount Ololokwe, crossing the stark expanse of the Chalbi Desert, and arriving at Loiyangalani on the lake's eastern shore. It is a deep dive into nomadic tribal cultures and remote wilderness.

Day by day

Day 1 — Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve

Depart Nairobi early in the morning, driving north past Mount Kenya. Enter the arid northern frontier and arrive at Samburu National Reserve by lunchtime. Head out on an afternoon game drive to spot the "Samburu Special Five"—rare northern species including the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and Somali ostrich.

Day 2 — Samburu to Ngurunit Oasis

Drive further north into the Ndoto Mountains to the small settlement of Ngurunit. This stunning area is home to the Samburu and Rendille people. Take a short afternoon hike guided by locals to the famous natural rock slides in the mountain rivers for a refreshing swim in the middle of the desert.

Day 3 — Crossing the Chalbi Desert to North Horr

Journey across the surreal, flat, white salt pan of the Chalbi Desert. The vast, shimmering expanse feels otherworldly. Stop at the desert oasis of Kalacha to meet the camel-herding Gabbra nomads before arriving at the sand dunes of North Horr to camp or stay in a local eco-lodge under the stars.

Day 4 — Arrival at the Jade Sea (Loiyangalani)

Drive out of the desert toward the rocky, volcanic hills surrounding the eastern shore of Lake Turkana. Arrive in Loiyangalani, where the striking turquoise color of the water creates a breathtaking contrast with the black volcanic rocks. Visit the Desert Museum to get an overview of the region's eight distinct indigenous tribes.

Day 5 — The El Molo Tribe & Rock Art Sites

Take a boat ride to visit the El Molo community on a nearby island. They are Kenya's smallest ethnic group, maintaining a unique way of life centered entirely on fishing and hunting crocodiles. In the afternoon, explore the nearby Marti rock art site to view ancient petroglyphs carved into the stones thousands of years ago.

Day 6 — Loiyangalani to Marsabit National Park

Begin the journey southward, driving up into the cooler, misty highlands of Marsabit. This isolated volcanic mountain rises sharply out of the desert and features dense forests. Visit Lake Paradise, a pristine crater lake located inside Marsabit National Park that is a haven for massive, tusker elephants.

Day 7 — Marsabit to Nairobi

Embark on the final long drive back down the smooth tarmac of the A2 highway, passing through Isiolo and dropping back into the green central highlands before arriving in Nairobi by sunset.
